Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807) was born in Switzerland but lived in
England for many years and after her marriage at the age of 40 she moved
to Rome, where her best works were produced.
Kauffmann began as a rococo painter but turned to neoclassical motifs, such as historical and mythological scenes, after her trips to Italy in the 1760s. She was extremely popular and produced more than 500 paintings. In England she was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy. She also did much decorative work on ceilings, walls and furniture for the British designer Robert Adam. Kauffmann was one of the first women to paint history motifs which introduced the Neoclassical style in England. |
