Pastell, 71 x 57 cm, Galleria Degli Uffizi, Firenze

Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757) was a Venetian artist whose portraits in Roccoco style made her the most popular portrait painter of her time. She was the first to use pastel in portrait painting and she made big success when she brought this medium to Paris in 1720. Carriera influenced many other artists such as Maurice Quentin de la Tour and Antoine Watteau.
